A State Representative for House District 47A’s Working Families
My name is Shelley Buck. I’m a mom, non-profit executive, & former local leader of the Prairie Island Indian Community. I’m running to be a champion for working families and the environment.
I made Minnesota my home to be closer to the ancestral lands, culture, and people of the Prairie Island Indian Community. Like so many of you, I love living in Maplewood because of its natural beauty, strong schools, and convenient location.
I didn’t grow up in a wealthy household. My family struggled to get by, but I was able to attend college thanks to the value my family placed on education and state-level programs that made college more affordable. I know the impact these policies had on me, and all families deserve the same opportunity to thrive.
Support for our working families goes beyond education. Too many families struggle to find safe, affordable housing and access quality, affordable healthcare. I also have a keen understanding of taking steps to ensure our communities are safe and livable, not just in the short term. As a Dakota woman, I know the importance of planning for the next seven generations, and that includes protecting our environment, especially our water.
As a former President of the Prairie Island Tribal Council, I have the experience and leadership to get things done. My work on the Tribal Council included creating a zero-carbon energy strategy, partnering with law enforcement to empower the Prairie Island Tribal Police to keep our communities safe, and expanding access to COVID-19 vaccines during the very early parts of the outbreak to protect our elders and the surrounding community.
As your State Representative, I will lead with my values and use my legislative and non-profit experience to be a champion for our working families. I hope to earn your support.
